| Hello Tony,
I just linked over to your site from: http://disused-rlys.fotopic.net/
had to comment on your portraits - your current picture and that of days gone by, or Days of Future Past on a Tuesday Afternoon After the Goldrush and In Held Twas I..... great shots, I had to smile - we all have photos like that.... loved the one of your pointing on the Breadsall viaduct - it could have been the cover of a Floyd album...! is that you or Nick Mason?
No seriously, yours is an expansive site that I will have to get back to later - I'm at work now - no computer at home, and it's the end of the workday here. Living in the States, I am not familiar with most of the locations you have photograhed. My main interest is Underground railways - London, Paris and the New York systems, former is where I live. I have been to several of the sites which feature photos of the uncompleted Northern Line extensions, and those which cover the Metropolitan railways abandoned branches beyond Amersham - so due to the former, I am a little bit aquainted with scenes from that area. Have also discovered Nick Catford's abandoned stations site at Sub-Brit, though his focus is on the remains of unused stations, or their former sites if they have been completely demolished. I really don't know that much about English buses, so I'll be looking your site over again for those pictures. I guess you probably know about the North London Transport Society's web-site which focuses on the Routemasters.
I originally clicked on your site, with it's title, figuring that with the black and white photo link, maybe there were pictures from the 50s and 60s of withdrawn London Transport stock in operation. Though your subject focus in on other pictures - it looks like a great selection and I'll return to the site.
Concerning, older LT pictures, I do know about Dewi Williams' website - if you know of any others, please let me know. Any questions about the New York or other U.S. transit systems drop me a line. If I don't know the answer, I'll try and find out. I'll try the same for regular railway or bus questions, though the latter would be new for me, and the digging (on-line or off line) would take a bit longer.
Cheers,
Ed from the States |

| Hello Tony,
I totally loved your web site I am going to look for your book. I came on to your site out of interest.
I am 41 and I wanted to see how Derby had changed since 1966. I didn't expect to see so many great pictures of interest.
Many thanks for taking the time to put them together for everyone to enjoy.

| Hi Tony,
this is Simon here, the chap with the CLR6 double decker in Cumbria. Thanks for your information, I added it to my site. www.thecolourwheels.com
I was looking at your site and read with some sadness that you seem to have had to leave a job that you enjoyed on health grounds. Your earlier photos are great, a moment in time, a treat to see the clothing and look of the 70's. You seem to have been a keen railway man then too. I am sorry to find that you have had a rough time of it and wish you all the best for the future. You seem to me to be a very knowledgable and experienced fellow, not to mention kind, sharing and full of good intentions. I wish you well. Simon Blenkinship |

| It's very interesting to find Berresfords on the Internet after nearly 30 years.
As a schoolboy in Stoke-on-Trent in 1973, I well remember Berresfords. An old Leyland Leopard used to pick us up to take us to the swimming baths once a week. Berresfords buses always looked like something out of the ark and were in an appalling condition. The linoleum on the floor was blistered from overheating. The driver constantly crashed the gears! We used to sing a version of the scout's song "Oh you'll never get to heaven" as follows: "Oh you'll never get to heaven in a Berresfords bus, because half way there you'll have to push!"
Is the company still in existence? If so, the DOT should take a careful look at what it allows to run on Britain's roads.
Kind regards,
Richard

| I too remember Berrisfords buses with a certain amount of fondness, they ran through the village where I lived as a child (Werrington), however maybe you can help me with a question that has been bugging me for many years, and that is, do you know the year that trolley buses stopped running in Hanley, Stoke-on-trent? I was born in 1952 and I am convinced that as a small child I remember trolley buses in Hanley market square. By trolley buses I mean "normal" shaped buses with rubber tyres but with a long "pole" sticking out of the top of the bus which made contact with an overhead cable of some sort. I am sure I remember that the driver or conducter had to manouver this fixed pole somehow with a long pole of his own when turning the bus sharply around. Was I "dreaming" all this, some people say that I was? |
|
|
|---|
| Having worked for the Berrsford Group for the last ten years of it's existance, I too have many memories, most of them good or entertaining! Yes sometimes their visual appearence left something to be desired, but they generally were in good condition and worked very hard.
Sadly you were mistaken in your belief that The Potteries had a Trolleybus system, it didn't in any shape or form. The area lost it's tram system in 1928. The closest 'Trolley' system was Wolverhampton which lasted until around 1970. |

YTH 815 and myself in Cannock Bus Station around 1982. This rare motor had the Johannnesburg export style front grille and very nice it looked. Many stories remembered when 'on the buses' and your site brought these floodind back. | Re: the photo taken around the back of the former Tailby & George (Blue Bus Services) garage in 1975 - the vehicle on the inspection ramp, to the left of YRB 483, is JRA 214D, the ex-WWII Humber tow truck, affectionately known as 'Monty' (because of its former service in the Sahara). Rescued from a farmer's field and refurbished by Clarence Renshaw, the Rolls-Royce engined Humber could pull a Fleetline effortlessly (and, incidentally, climb slopes steeper than the driver's nerve would allow).
Monty was sitting on the ramp on the night of the fire, and thus escaped. Last seen in Coventry Museum (repainted in Museum colours, but still with BBS 'wings' emblem on doors). |
|
|
|---|
| Hi, I have posted a comment on the TNU687F Blue Bus Roadliner section but could not pass without a comment on 'Monty'. This monster could pull fleetlines, or anything else, but it could not stop them if the guy at the back was not doing any braking! It nearly tipped me over on a corner when I was towing 7000HP on a bar back to the garage and with it's high centre of gravity and short wheelbase it was certainly good for a nervous ride. Oh, and you were lucky if it did 8mpg with the Rolls Royce petrol engine under the bonnet. I think they were called a Humber 'Pig'. Very appropriate! |

Just found your website. The pictures of Derby's trolleybuses brought back many happy childhood memories.

I know this is not the best of shots but it is rare. It captures TNU 687F, the Daimler Roadliner SRC6 with Cummins V6-200 engine and Plaxton Panorama I coachwork, waiting at traffic lights in St. Peter's St. Derby in November 1975, about five weeks before she was destroyed in the garage fire. By this time, she had been repainted with revised livery with Derby Blue Bus Services fleetnames. I so regret that this exciting coach was lost forever - I'd love to have ridden in it or even owned it! Blue Bus Services of Willington |

| Hi Tony
I worked as an engineer for Blue Bus and looked after TNU 687F, the Roadliner from new as well as the other vehicles until I left to join Nottingham City Transport in 1971. I did a course at Daimler in 1967 in preparation for that task. The Roadliner was a brilliant machine if looked after properly. For example, it was important to do the crosshead and valve clearances regularly or the gap widened, and on over revving the crosshead slipped sideways and the valve then dropped through the piston at speed. Black and White had this happen regularly, TNU did not. Also the rubber suspension needed to be set up carefully and oils changed regularly. It only broke down once in my time there when the accelerator stuck wide open in Stoke. I drove it back and I have to say it was a brilliant beast.
One funny story which demonstrates what a potent animal this was. After a driver complaint of 'not pulling' I was out on test with TNU and climbing the hill out of Newton Solney towards Burton when an A40 driver thought 'bus, I will overtake him climbing the hill. Bearing in mind I was testing for pulling power, TNU accelerated up the hill with the A40 alongside all the way. I think the driver was a bit shaken to meet TNU.
Blue Bus was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned a lot from the engineers, not only Clarence Renshaw but Sam Heathcote, George Warren and Gordon Swindells, not to mention George Potts the painter. An absolutely top class bus company that tried very hard to 'do it right'.
I moved on via Notts City, eventually to Group Chief Engineer for our arch rival Trent Buses from 1994 to 1999 where I tried to emulate the 'Blue Bus way' and improved the later Leyland National fleet to be something to be proud of, both in presentation and reliability. I have not long returned from the USA where I was responsible for the engineering and maintenance of 70,000 buses and coaches across the US and Canada including Greyhound. Not bad for a Blue Bus lad born in Willington.
If anyone has any Blue Bus photos or paraphanalia I would be interested in it if disposed of. |

Mapperley Tunnel, 1,132 yards long where it passed under the Plains Road. In January 1953 a section of the roof of this tunnel fell in, completely blocking the line for several months and although repaired, was in such poor condition that the line was closed in 1960 to the West through to Daybrook. The tunnel had suffered similar collapses all through its life, due to subsidence - this was mining territory! Great Northern remains - Notts & Derby |

| Hello Tony,
I found your pictures very enjoyable. I was especially interested in the Mapperley tunnel pics as it is quite close to me. I wondered, when you visited did you have to get permission? I wasn't sure if it was on private land belonging to the nearby farm or if it was just common land. I'd quite like to go down and take a look at it but don't want to trespass.
thanks in advance for any info

| Hi.
I grew up around here as a kid and I remember going down this cutting occasionally with friends, up to the usual mischief. (Aged 10 years) I knew there used to be a tunnel there, as my father had told me so, but I never used to be able to visualise it, having never seen pictures. (until a few years ago) However, just to the right of the rough patch of earth is in your picture is roughly where me and a couple of mates once dug down to see if we could find the tunnel. We found the large coping stone plinth, but didn't realise at the time what it was and gave up. I think the coping stone itself is probably at track bed level, much like that at the east portal. If I had known we were that close, we would no doubt have dug further, caused a collapse of earth, got hurt and been told off by parents. Good job we gave up really!
Cracking photo, really brough some memories back! |

|
|---|
| Hi Tony,
Been having another look at your photo's. These of the Denby line were interesting. Until 1999, I worked on the Railway out of Derby, I was responsible for off track maintenance, the level crossings and their signs and vegetation problems were my responsibility. You have no idea how many new signs I have had put up on that branch line. They used to be made of thick aluminium, I'm sure that they used to be stolen to repair caravans etc. This stopped when I started fitting fibre glass signs. Spent many hours up on the Denby branch over the years.

| Eyup Tony.
Just been looking at your A.E.Evans photos.I worked for them 1969-1979 and recognise all the wagons in your photos.
Can you remember Toft Bros and Tomlinson at Darley Dale and if so were they the company in league with North Derbyshire Engineering(Norde).I seem to recall somebody telling me that when the M1 was opened as far as the A52 they were doing two London's a day;no speed limit then.If it wasn't TB&T it was possibly Mickleover Transport of "Leys Black Heart Malleable Castings " fame maybe? any idea.
Thanks

|
|
|---|
| North Derbyshire Engineering (NorDE) was bought by Brooklands Aviation before Hendrickson's which is why it was moved to Sywell Aerodrome, but I think that might have come after a move from Derbyshire to development area Corby. I think the dates were 1976 and 1985 respectively, but the company had meanwhile taken over the other "rubber bogie" manufacturer Rydewell Engineering (originally a NorDE break-away group) in 1984 and the company is still at Sywell known now as Hendrickson (Europe) Ltd. |
